In 1913, Percy MacKaye's play "Sanctuary: A Bird Masque" was in rehearsal for its first performance at the Meriden Bird Club sanctuary dedication in New Hampshire. This particular photograph from the Genthe photograph collection, housed in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, shows Percy MacKaye in character as Alwyn, the poet. The title of the play was devised by MacKaye himself.
