A Poet in New Hampshire

In 1913, Percy MacKaye's play "Sanctuary: A Bird Masque" was in rehearsal for its first performance at the Meriden Bird Club sanctuary dedication in New Hampshire. This particular photograph from the Genthe photograph collection, housed in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, shows Percy MacKaye in character as Alwyn, the poet. The title of the play was devised by MacKaye himself. The photograph is accompanied by an original diascope viewing case and is a unique glimpse into the world of theater production in the early 20th century.
